Water glass

Within the scope of alumosilicates program, „Alumina“ doo Zvornik offers sodium silicate also known as a water glass. This alkaline solution with the high viscosity is primarily developed as a raw material for producing different types of silicates and alumosilicates. The chemical and physical composition of water glass suggests a wide range of application. Since sodium silicates are among the Earth’s most common chemical components, their potential for harmful environmental effects is insignificant. Water glass has a wide application:

Raw material

It is used as one of the main raw materials in syntetic zeolite production. In silica-gel and silica-sol production, it is used as main raw material after sodium is removed by ion exchange or pyrolisys. Moreover, it is used as the main raw material for precipitated silica production, where is sodium removed from water glass by chemical treatment (typically by using sulfuric acid).

Detergent

As a detergent ingredient it helps saponification and emulsification of oils and fats. It helps particular matter suspension and prevents stain redeposit. It is also used for corrosion prevention in processing and washing equipment and as a buffer (it maintains constant pH)

Construction

Sodium silicate is added to concrete mixtures to reduce the water permeability in concrete, and also concrete gets laid on with the mixtures containing sodium silicate. To increase consolidation and soil capacity, added soil injection contain Na-silicate reduces soil water permeability and plays an important role in preventing rapid flow through porous media. As a binder, small quantities of sodium silicate are added in the production of asbestine plates and blocks, bricks, roughcast and inflammable cements.

Moulding

It is used as a binder for the mould preparation and cast coating to ensure easier separation of castings.

Textile industry

Used for bleaching in combination with hydrogen peroxide in the capacity of its decomposition inhibitor.

Production of paper

Used for cellulose bleaching (in combination with hydrogen peroxide), for regeneration of old/waste paper (in combination with hydrogen peroxide removes press), and as a filler in the paper production.

Packaging

The product can be delivered in barrels, car and railway cisterns with a special usage purpose. It should be kept indoors.

Water Glass is registered under REACH Regulation
